Strömsholm Palace

WHY STRÖMSHOLM IS SPECIAL

Strömsholm is not your typical nature reserve—it’s a blend of rich history and stunning landscapes. The area is famous for Strömsholm Palace, one of Sweden’s royal palaces, which dates back to the 18th century. The palace itself is a great starting point before you wander off into the natural surroundings.

The reserve is spread across a series of small islands and wetlands along the Kolbäcksån river. This creates a diverse environment where you can find everything from thick forests and open fields to marshes and waterways. It’s a photographer’s dream, with endless opportunities to capture both scenic landscapes and wildlife.

NATURE AND HIKING TRAILS

One of the highlights of the area is the Bruksleden Trail, a multi-day hiking route that stretches across vast sections of Västmanland. The trail spans approximately 250 kilometers, running from Virsbo in the north to Hallstahammar in the south, with Strömsholm Nature Reserve lying at the southern end.

This long-distance trail is divided into 27 sections, each varying in length and difficulty, making it accessible for both day hikers and more experienced trekkers looking for an extended outdoor adventure. The section that passes near Strömsholm offers a moderately easy hike, perfect for a day trip if you’re based around Västerås or looking for a shorter nature escape.

Hiking the Bruksleden means you’ll be immersed in Sweden’s classic landscapes—thick forests, serene lakes, open fields, and small wetlands. The trail is well-marked with orange blazes, so it’s easy to follow without getting lost.

For those who are up for a longer hike, you can tackle multiple sections over several days, camping along the way at designated rest areas. Many sections of the Bruksleden offer rustic shelters (vindskydd), allowing you to spend the night surrounded by nature. This makes it an excellent option for anyone wanting to experience the Swedish wilderness more deeply.

Fun fact: Bruksleden is part of Sweden’s industrial history, as the trail passes through several old industrial areas and ironworks ("bruk" in Swedish), giving you a glimpse into the country’s past as you hike.

Another great option is the shorter loop trails closer to Strömsholm Palace.

These trails take you through a mix of meadows and wooded areas, where you're likely to spot deer, foxes, and a variety of birds. Keep your eyes peeled—this area is known for its rich wildlife, especially around the Kolbäcksån River. The wetlands here attract many species of birds, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

For a more immersive experience, take the trails that lead deeper into the reserve, away from the palace grounds. These paths are less frequented and offer a real sense of solitude, perfect for nature photography and peaceful walks.

WILDLIFE SPOTTING

Strömsholm is home to a variety of wildlife, making it an exciting place for photographers and nature lovers alike. In the forests, you can encounter roe deer and sometimes even moose, especially in the early mornings or late afternoons. The reserve’s wetlands attract many bird species, including cranes, herons, and ducks.

During spring, the area is buzzing with life, as migratory birds return to nest. It’s also a great time for spotting smaller animals like hares and squirrels as they become more active. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a red fox wandering through the open fields.

In autumn, the forest transforms into a blaze of colors, offering a stunning backdrop for spotting wildlife. The cooler weather brings more animal activity, so this is a perfect time for nature walks and photography.

HORSES AT STRÖMSHOLM

Strömsholm isn’t just about hiking and wildlife—it’s also deeply connected to Sweden’s equestrian traditions. The area surrounding the palace is home to Sweden's most famous horse training center, and equestrian events are regularly held here.

If you visit during the summer months, you may see horses training or even catch a glimpse of equestrian competitions. The long-standing equestrian history of Strömsholm gives the reserve a unique atmosphere, blending natural beauty with Sweden’s cultural heritage.

Strömsholm Marketenteri

STRÖMSHOLM MARKETENTERI: A HISTORICAL TOUCH

For a taste of history, take a break at Strömsholm Marketenteri, an old military canteen where soldiers used to gather for meals. Dating back to the time when Strömsholm was a strategic military post, this canteen adds an interesting historical layer to your outdoor adventure. Today, you can enjoy a fika or a typical Swedish lunch here after your hike, but it’s fun to know that soldiers once sat here to recharge after long days.

The Marketenteri is just one of the many historical landmarks dotted around the area. It’s a great spot to relax before continuing on your hike or heading back to explore the surrounding trails.

OTHER TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

Pack binoculars: With so much bird activity, especially near the wetlands, binoculars will help you get up close to the action without disturbing the wildlife.

Best for photography: The light in Strömsholm is magical in the early morning or late afternoon. You’ll find beautiful reflections on the river and lakes, with soft light filtering through the trees.

Plan for a full day: There’s so much to explore here, from the hiking trails and wildlife to the equestrian activities and palace grounds. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in nature.

While the history adds a nice backdrop, Strömsholm Nature Reserve with its well-marked trails, rich wildlife, and peaceful surroundings, is a great spot for hiking, photography, or just soaking up nature.
